Stroke Care Overview

Often referred to as a cerebrovascular accident, a stroke is defined as an accident to the brain with “rapidly developing clinical signs of focal or global disturbance to cerebral function, with symptoms lasting 24 hours or longer, or leading to death, with no apparent cause other than of vascular origin and includes cerebral infarction, intracerebral hemorrhage, and subarachnoid hemorrhage” – World Health Organization. However, a stroke is no accident. It is more like a “brain attack” like a “heart attack”.

Causes:

  • 85% are caused by an interruption of blood flow to a part of the brain.
  • 15% are caused by a blood vessel burst.

Time is Brain Function:

  • Each minute untreated, millions of neurons die.
  • This is why it is so important to get the proper treatment.
